Préservons le boisé et notre santé !

La ville de Deux-Montagnes est un joyau des Laurentides où il fait bon vivre. L’objectif de cette pétition est de protéger le boisé rue Terrasse Goyer d’une destruction imminente pour en faire un lieu d’activité citoyenne (chemin forestier en été, chemin de ski de fond en hiver…). Le futur de notre santé dépend de notre capacité à maintenir la santé des environnements dans lesquels nous vivons (Dre. Pétrin-Desrosiers). Comme le boisé a obtenu la plus forte priorisation de conservation des infrastructures naturelles par la Fondation David Suzuki (figure), la Ville de Deux-Montagnes devrait tout mettre en œuvre pour le protéger et racheter ce terrain au promoteur GBD.

Voici ce qui va arriver si la Ville de Deux-Montagnes ne rachète pas le boisé au promoteur GBD :

1.      Nous allons perdre un environnement rafraîchissant bénéfique pour notre santé physique et psychologique. En aout 2021, avec la canicule, la température ressentie à Deux Montagnes est montée à 42 °C ! Selon le GIEC, les vagues de canicules vont être de plus en plus chaudes et fréquentes d’ici 2100. La température moyenne va augmenter entre 4 à 7 degrés en 2100 pour le sud du Québec.

2.      Nous allons perdre nos précieux érables noirs indigènes (espèce déclarée vulnérable depuis 2012). Ce boisé est l’un des derniers de la région de Montréal à protéger des érables noirs qui risquent de disparaître complètement à cause du réchauffement climatique.  Tout un écosystème sera détruit qui comprend aussi des lapins, colibris, moqueurs roux, chardonnets jaunes, renards, couleuvres, raton-laveurs, marmottes et oiseaux urubus à tête rouge.

3.      Le sous-sol devra être dynamité pour permettre le nivellement du terrain qui, rappelons-le, est du roc ! La ville ne pourra donc pas garder sa promesse de protéger nos précieux érables noirs.

4.      Nous avons déjà perdu notre grande plage Brunette/El Rancho. Apprenons des leçons du passé pour ne pas aussi perdre notre boisé !

Voici ce qui va arriver si la Ville de Deux-Montagnes rachète le boisé au promoteur GBD :

1.      Un comité environnemental sera créé pour faire du boisé un lieu d’activité citoyenne quatre saisons avec de nombreux bienfaits pour notre santé physique et psychologique. Imaginons un chemin forestier rafraîchissant en été avec des fontaines brumisantes, un parcours bucolique à l’automne, un circuit de ski de fond en hiver (pouvant être relié à celui du parc central) et une source de sève d’érable noir au printemps accessible à tous !

2.      Grâce au phénomène d’évapotranspiration, le boisé va refroidir la température ambiante de 6 degrés lors des canicule. Nous garderons une oasis de fraîcheur à proximité de la plage du parc Gault Gillespie pour s’adapter aux changements climatiques et aux vagues de chaleur.

Notre solution :

Nous proposons une solution à la Ville de Deux-Montagnes : il existe un programme de la Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal qui aide les municipalités à acquérir des milieux naturels pour la Trame verte et bleue avec un financement de 70 % des dépenses admissibles. Profitons-en !

Let’s preserve the woods and our health!

The city of Deux-Montagnes is a jewel of the Laurentians where life is good. The objective of this petition is to protect the woods on rue Terrasse Goyer from imminent destruction and make it a place of citizen activity (forest path in summer, cross-country ski path in winter, etc.). The future of our health depends on our ability to maintain the health of the environments in which we live (Dr. Pétrin-Desrosiers). As the woods have received the highest natural infrastructure conservation priority from the David Suzuki Foundation (Figure 1), the City of Deux-Montagnes should do everything possible to protect them and buy back this land from the promoter GBD.

Here is what will happen if the City of Deux-Montagnes does not buy the woods from the promoter GBD:

1. We will lose a refreshing environment beneficial to our physical and psychological health. In August 2021, with the heat wave, the temperature felt in Deux Montagnes rose to 42°C! According to the IPCC, the waves of heat waves will be increasingly hot and frequent by 2100. The average temperature will increase between 4 to 7 degrees in 2100 for southern Quebec.

2. We will lose our precious native black maples (species declared vulnerable since 2012). These woods are one of the lasts in the Montreal region to protect black maple trees that are in danger of completely disappearing due to global warming. An entire ecosystem will be destroyed which also includes rabbits, hummingbirds, brown trashers, American goldfinches, foxes, grass snakes, raccoons, groundhogs and turkey vultures.

3. This wooded area will have to be dynamited to allow the leveling of the land which, let us remember, is rock! The city will therefore not be able to keep its promise to protect our precious black maple trees.

4. We have already lost our great Brunette/El Rancho Beach. Let's learn lessons from the past so that we don't lose our woodland too!

Here is what will happen if the City of Deux-Montagnes buys the woods from the promoter GBD:
 
1. An environmental committee will be created to make the woods a four-season place of citizen activity activity with many benefits for our physical and psychological health. Let's imagine a refreshing forest path in summer with misting fountains, a bucolic route in fall, a cross-country ski circuit in winter (which can be linked to that of the central park) and a source of black maple sap in spring accessible to all!
2. Thanks to the phenomenon of evapotranspiration, these woods will cool the ambient temperature by 6 degrees during a heat wave. We will keep an oasis of freshness near the beach at Gault Gillespie Park to adapt to climate change and heat waves.
 
Our solution:
 
We are proposing a solution to the City of Deux-Montagnes: there is a program of the Montreal Metropolitan Community that helps municipalities acquire natural environments for the Green and Blue Infrastructure with funding of 70% of eligible expenses. Let's take advantage!
